Description

The mechanism of this gun was based on flint, which produced a spark and ignited the powder when the bolt was cocked. It had to be reloaded manually after each shot. The ammunition consisted of gunpowder, bullet and paper wad and was loaded through the muzzle.

In combat, these weapons were usually used to make a single shot: reloading them was a long affair and time was short. Therefore, soldiers had to take swords or sabers with them or use the pistol as a baton.

In 1718, Tula was visited by Tsar Peter the Great, who commissioned the wealthy Demidov family to build Russia’s first gun factory. Decades later, thanks to the efforts of the Demidovs, Tula became the largest metalworking center in Eastern Europe.
